Sidney Brown, engineer and co-founder of the company that would become ABB, and his wife Jenny Sulzer had the Langmatt villa in Baden built by Karl Moser in 1900 -1901. From 1908, advised by the painter Carl Montag, they purchased in a few years works by Renoir, Monet, Cézanne, Pissarro, Sisley, Degas and Gauguin, then still considered contemporary art. The house preserves furniture, decorative arts, park and Belle Époque atmosphere around around fifty impressionist paintings. After the legacy of John A. Brown, the Langmatt Foundation opened the museum to the public in 1990. The whole is unique in Switzerland for the unity between domestic architecture, garden and collection. The four selected Renoirs combine the banks of the Seine and portraits of children, revealing the family and luminous dimension of impressionism. The "Museum Langmatt" selection notably compares On the banks of the Seine in Argenteuil - Renoir and Portrait of a child with a hat - Renoir. His reading favors details.
Langmatt offers less of a museum image than a house where Impressionism has remained associated with the furniture, books and gardens of its collectors.
