Vienna · Opened in 1891 · Five millennia of imperial collections
Commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph I to collect and present the imperial collections, the Kunsthistorisches Museum was built between 1871 and 1891 by Gottfried Semper and Carl von Hasenauer. It solemnly opens on October 17 1891 opposite its twin building dedicated to natural history. Its historicist architecture, its staircases decorated by the Company of Artists in which the young Gustav Klimt participated, its dome and its galleries form a real palace of Arts. The funds inherited from the Habsburgs cover five millennia: Egypt and the Near East, Greek and Roman antiquities, Kunstkammer, coins and one of the most important galleries of European painting. Raphael, Titian, Rubens and Dürer show here how the sacred image evolves between the Italian Renaissance, the Germanic world and Baroque power. The "Vienna Museum of Art History" selection notably compares The Holy Family with Saint Jean-Baptiste - Raphaël and Ecce Homo - Titian. His reading favors space.
In Vienna, the museum not only houses the imperial collections: the entire building depicts the Habsburg idea of a world ordered by the arts.
