The history of the Cincinnati Art Museum begins with citizen mobilization, supported in particular by the Women's Art Museum Association founded in 1877. A public subscription allowed the incorporation of the Cincinnati Museum Association on February 15, 1881. James W. McLaughlin's building opened on May 17, 1886 in Eden Park: it was then the first art museum built especially for this purpose west of the Allegheny Mountains. Enlarged several times, it developed a collection today rich in more than seventy-three thousand works covering six thousand years and the cultures of the world. European painting, American arts, antiques, photography, fashion, textiles and nearly seven thousand objects decorative arts and design make up this panorama. The Cincinnati Wing, opened in 2003, also shows the local role of Rookwood ceramics, furniture and regional designers. The chosen works confront four conceptions of the figure.
