Ohio · Founded in 1878 · From Antiquity to contemporary creation
The Columbus Museum of Art combines European and American modernism, Ohio-related artists, social photography and contemporary creation.
Founded in 1878 as the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, the museum was the first art museum in Ohio to receive a state charter. After an initial installation in the Victorian home of Francis Sessions, he opened a italian Renaissance style building on Broad Street. Its reunion with the Columbus Art School in 1887 permanently inscribed education and creativity in its identity. The collection extends from Antiquity to today, with strength particular in modern European and American art, impressionism, German expressionism, cubism, photography and folk art. It notably preserves the largest ensembles dedicated to George Bellows and Elijah Pierce and Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson. Matisse, Renoir, Monet and Cézanne give the selection a concentrated journey between the Normandy coast, portrait and modern landscape. The "Columbus Art Museum" selection notably compares Congress, Étretat - Henri Matisse and Christine Lerolle embroidering - Renoir. His reading favors the story.
In Columbus, collection and transmission move forward together: the museum views masterpieces as starting points for observing, comparing and creating.
