Paris · Museum opened in 1932 · Delacroix's last apartment and workshop
Eugène Delacroix moved to 6 rue de Fürstenberg in 1857 to work near the Saint-Sulpice church, where he decorated the chapel of the Holy Angels. He had a workshop built at the bottom of the garden, lit according to his needs and remained there until his death in 1863. Threatened with disappearance, the apartment and the workshop were saved by the Society of Friends of Eugène Delacroix, gathered around Maurice Denis. The museum opened to the public in 1932, became a national museum in 1971 and joined the public establishment of the Louvre in 2004. Nearly one thousand two hundred cultural properties brought together paintings, sketches, drawings, prints, manuscripts, furniture, souvenirs and objects brought from Morocco. Body studies, selected historical costumes and episodes show the preparatory work of an artist for whom movement and color are first born from observation. The selection "Musée National Eugène Delacroix" notably compares Mirabeau in front of Dreux-Brézé, first sketch by Delacroix and Study of a Naked Man, known as Le Polonais - Delacroix. His reading favors atmosphere.
In Fürstenberg's studio, Delacroix's work regains its intimate scale: sketches, objects and memories reveal the making of romanticism.
