Born in 1862 in Priorka, near Kyiv, Mykola Pymonenko grew up in the studio of his father, an icon painter and wood sculptor. He studied at the Kyiv Drawing School directed by Mykola Murashko, then continued his training at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Returning to Kyiv for health reasons, he taught and built a work devoted to urban and rural genre scenes.
