The Neue Pinakothek was the first European public museum dedicated to the contemporary art of its time and today preserves a major account of the 19th century.
King Ludwig I of Bavaria founded the Neue Pinakothek opposite the Alte Pinakothek in order to put the art of his time in dialogue with the old masters. Opened to the public in 1853, it was then the first public museum in Europe exclusively dedicated to contemporary creation. The original building was destroyed in 1944 -1945; a new gallery designed by Alexander von Branca opened in 1981. The collection crosses neoclassicism, romanticism, realism, impressionism and modernity around David, Goya, Friedrich, Courbet, Manet, Monet, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne and Klimt. His masterpieces are currently being presented in other Munich sites during the renovation of the building. The "Nee" selection Pinakothek notably compares Water Lilies - Claude Monet and Orchard in flower with a view of Arles - Vincent van Gogh. His reading favors light.
