Nicholas Roerich was born in Saint Petersburg in 1874 and died in Naggar, in the Kullu Valley, in 1947. Trained at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts between 1893 and 1898, he became interested very early in archeology, Slavic origins and medieval Russia. The Overseas Guests advance colorful ships on rhythmic water and transform ancient history into an almost legendary vision. Roerich directs the Drawing School of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts from 1906 to 1916 and also designs sets for the theater and the Ballets Russes. After the Revolution, he headed the Drawing School of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts from 1906 to 1916 and also designed sets for the theater and the Ballets Russes. After the Revolution, he stayed in Scandinavia, London and then the United States. From 1923, India became the center of his life. A great expedition carried out from 1923 to 1928 crossed Central Asia; in 1929, the family settled in Naggar and founded the Urusvati Institute. The Himalayan ranges then became his essential motif: simplified plans, deep blue, purple, pink and white transform the mountain into a spiritual presence. Basgo, Sacred Himalayas or Path to Kailash unite observation of relief, monastic architecture and symbolism. Roerich also designed the Banner of Peace and inspired the Roerich Pact for the Protection of Cultural Property. The Nicholas Roerich Museum estimates his work at nearly seven thousand paintings.
