Born in 1862 in the Georgian region of Kakheti, Niko Pirosmani led a modest life and trained alone. He painted for taverns, businesses and ordinary sponsors, often on black oilcloth, an available material which became an expressive component of his style. Animals, merchants, musicians, parties, signs and landscapes compose a very personal chronicle of the Georgia of his time. Pirosmani voluntarily simplifies the volume, isolates his figures and uses a restrained palette where white, earth and some bold colors emerge from the background.
