Nikolai Gay was born in Voronezh in 1831 and died in 1894 at his property in Ivanovski, Ukraine. After scientific studies, he chose painting and entered the Imperial Academy in Saint Petersburg. A long stay in Italy revealed the old masters to him, but his ambition quickly became contemporary: to renew history and the Gospel through a psychological truth without idealization. Peter the Great questioning Tsarevich Alexis pits the sovereign and his son against each other in a silent interior; documents, looks and distance between the two men make the conflict between reasons of state and family drama sensitive. From the 1880s, his friendship with Leo Tolstoy reinforced a increasingly austere moral search. What is truth? Christ and Pilate, painted in 1890, scandalized by his exhausted Christ in the face of a massive Pilate lit head-on; banned from exhibition, the painting was finally acquired by Pavel Tretyakov.
