1888 -1943 · Sweden, Paris and cosmopolitan modernism
Nils Dardel was born in Bettna, Sweden in 1888 and died in New York in 1943. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, he went to Paris in 1910 and discovered Matisse, post-impressionism, the Ballets Russes and the decorative freedom of the avant-garde. However, he refuses to lock himself into a group: his linear drawing, his deliberately flat perspectives and his bold colors serve as a very personal theater of love, jealousy, travel and death. The dying Dandy, painted in 1918, brings together figures around a collapsed young man whose gestures seem both sincere and choreographed. The red of blood, precious clothes, the floral carpet and space almost without depth transform the funeral scene into a modern, ambiguous and intensely decorative image. Dardel travels widely, notably to Japan, and also produces numerous portraits and watercolors. Behind the elegance, humor and exoticism remains a constant concern: the fragile body, desire and social representation respond to each other as if on a stage. The "Nils Dardel" selection notably compares The Dying Dandy. His reading favors drawing.
Dardel transforms emotion into ceremony: line, color and pose give the intimate drama the disturbing brilliance of a worldly spectacle.
