West Palm Beach · Founded in 1941 · American, European, Asian and contemporary arts
The Norton Museum of Art was founded in 1941 by industrialist Ralph Hubbard Norton and his wife Elizabeth Calhoun Norton to provide South Florida with its first major artistic institution. The Art Deco building designed by Marion Sims Wyeth opened to the public on February 8, 1941. The core formed by the founders expanded to more than eight thousand nine hundred works spread across five departments: European, American, Asian, contemporary art and photography. Cezanne gives the portrait a dense construction, Matisse organizes color and elegance, Gauguin transforms an evangelical episode into personal meditation and Monet makes the Mediterranean garden a space vibrant with light. The "Norton" selection Museum of Art notably compares Portrait of Alfred Hauge - Paul Cézanne and The Black Velvet Hat - Henri Matisse. His reading favors light.
The Norton Museum of Art was born from a gesture of sharing: transforming a private collection into public heritage for all of South Florida.
