The Norton Museum of Art was founded in 1941 by industrialist Ralph Hubbard Norton and his wife Elizabeth Calhoun Norton to provide South Florida with its first major artistic institution. The Art Deco building designed by Marion Sims Wyeth opened to the public on February 8, 1941. The core formed by the founders expanded to more than eight thousand nine hundred works spread across five departments: European, American, Asian, contemporary art and photography.
