Founded by brewer Carl Jacobsen, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek combines French and Danish antiques, sculpture and painting in architecture designed for contemplation.
The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek was founded by Carl Jacobsen, Danish brewer, industrialist and great patron. In 1888, he gave his collection to the public and began the construction of a museum which opened in 1897; a new donation of antiques followed in 1899. The institution today preserves more than ten thousand works spanning approximately six thousand years, from ancient civilizations to painting and sculpture of the 19th and 20th centuries. Its name combines the Greek words designating the sculpture and the place where it is kept. Degas, Van Gogh and Monet illustrate the strength of his French ensemble: movement of dancers, Parisian modernity, portrait of Father Tanguy and landscape of Giverny.
