Kyoto -Edo, 1658 -1716 · Rinpa, rhythm and stylized nature
Ogata Kôrin was born in Kyoto in 1658 and died in 1716. Coming from a rich family of textile merchants, he developed a sensitivity where painting, lacquer, clothing and decoration shared the same intelligence of the motif. With his brother Ogata Kenzan, he became a major figure in what would later be called the Rinpa school. Iris in Yatsuhashi, painted after 1709 in ink and colors on gold leaf, deployed two screens of six panels each measuring 163.7 × 352.4 cm. The repetition of irises and the broken bridge evoke an episode of the Tales of Ise without representing the travelers of the text. Violent waves, around 1704 -1711, concentrates the energy of water in almost calligraphic curves. Red and white plum trees in flower, a late work now a National Treasure at the MOA Museum, oppose two asymmetrical trees around a stylized watercourse; the tarashikomi technique mixes the colors still moist in the trunks. Kôrin does not copy nature: he extracts from its forms a grammar of repetition, deviation and emptiness. The "Ogata Kôrin" selection notably compares Iris to Yatsuhashi and Violent Waves. His reading favors movement.
In Kôrin, gold is not a background: it is the active space where the iris repeats itself, the wave contracts and the stream invents its own time.
