The Death of the Virgin, also called Dormition, gathers the apostles around Mary's bed and transforms the passage of death into an image of mourning, prayer and hope.
Mary's death is not recounted directly in the canonical Gospels. Its iconography develops from ancient traditions, apocryphal texts and stories disseminated in the Middle Ages, notably the Golden Legend. According to this tradition, the apostles are miraculously gathered around the Virgin at the time of her Dormition, a term meaning that she "falls asleep".
