Orazio Riminaldi was born in Pisa in 1593 and died there in 1630. Trained in Tuscany with Ranieri Alberghetti then Aurelio Lomi, he went to Rome and discovered Caravaggio's revolution as well as the interpretations of his first disciples. His painting gradually abandons Mannerist elegance for life-size figures, a close space and a light that makes the action immediately physical. Isaac's Sacrifice, dated around 1625, captures the moment when the divine order is interrupted. Abraham maintains his son while the angel intervenes; hands, gazes and diagonals concentrate violence and relief in a very tight group.
