Wilhelm and Henny Hansen built Ordrupgaard in 1918 and immediately opened their French collection to the public on a fixed day each week. Their ensemble, formed between 1916 and 1918, brings together romanticism, realism and the school of Barbizon and impressionism. After the banking crisis of 1922, part of the works were sold and then gradually reconstituted. Henny Hansen bequeathed house and collection to the Danish state; Ordrupgaard became national museum in 1953. Monet, Renoir, Cézanne and Delacroix show the extent of the founders' taste.
