1878 -1943 · Germany, Paris and humanist abstraction
Otto Freundlich was born in Stolp in 1878 and died at the Sobibór extermination camp in 1943. Installed in Paris in 1908, he frequented the Bateau-Lavoir and the avant-gardes without directly following Cubism. His decisive discovery came from Cézanne then from the stained glass windows of Chartres, on which he worked in 1914. He then conceived the work as an organism made up of colored cells: each part remained autonomous while participating in a harmonious whole, the image of a reconciled society. Compositions, Green-Red, Die Mutter and Ein Baum then show how rounded shapes, tesserae and flat areas construct an abstraction still linked to life. Freundlich practices painting, sculpture, mosaic and engraving, participates in European abstract groups and defends collective art. Jewish and committed artist, he was targeted by the Nazis; his sculpture The New Man is reproduced on the cover of the catalog of the exhibition of "degenerate art" in 1937. Refugee in France, arrested then deported, he was assassinated in Sobibór. His abstraction remains inseparable from his ideal of fraternity. The "Otto Freundlich" selection notably compares Composition and Composition Green-Red. His reading favors storytelling.
Freundlich constructs color as an ideal society: each cell has its voice, but none can exist fully without the agreement of all the others.
