1556 -1629 · Leiden, Rome, Brussels and Antwerp
Otto van Veen was born in Leiden in 1556 and died in Brussels in 1629. Coming from a cultured family, he trained in the ancient Netherlands before staying for several years in Italy, where Antiquity and Roman mannerism strengthened his taste for noble figures, ordered composition and scholarly allegory. Back in the north, he became court painter to the governors of the Spanish Netherlands and directed a sought-after workshop in Antwerp. The young Peter Paul Rubens worked there for several years: Van Veen transmitted to him a classical culture, the sense of the great story and the intellectual ambition of the profession. The Lament of Christ brings the bodies together around the Savior in an architecture of gestures, looks and draperies that transform pain into meditation. The Portrait of Otto van Veen on his easel, surrounded by his family, painted in Leiden in 1584, constitutes an exceptional document: nineteen members of his family, to which is added a cat, surround the artist at work. This domestic meeting is unique in a work mainly devoted to history, religion and humanist emblems. The "Otto van Veen" selection notably compares The Lamentation of Christ and Portrait of Otto van Veen on his easel, surrounded by his family. His reading favors the material.
Van Veen unites the discipline of the history painter with the spirit of the humanist: the gesture tells, the figure instructs and the composition orders the thought.
