Impressionism was born from research undertaken before the first independent exhibition in 1874. Heirs of the outdoors of Barbizon and the example of Boudin, Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley and Morisot paint roads, gardens, rivers, beaches and suburbs. They use short touches, slightly mixed colors and colored shadows to convey a momentary perception. The landscape is not separated from modernity: bridges, trains, leisure activities and towns appear next to the fields. Eight group exhibitions followed one another between 1874 and 1886.
