Born in Saint-Gilles-du-Gard in 1699, Pierre Subleyras won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1728, which allowed him to perfect his art at the French Academy in Rome. Quickly recognized by the Roman and Vatican artistic circles, he became one of Pope Benedict XIV's favorite painters.
