1544 -1628 · Venice between Tintoretto, drawing and great stories
Jacopo Negretti, known as Palma the Younger to distinguish him from his great-uncle Palma the Elder, was born in Venice in 1544 and died there in 1628. His training passed through the court of Urbino then through Rome, where he assimilated the inventions of Taddeo and Federico Zuccaro as well as a strong taste for drawing. Returning to Venice around 1573, he found a city engaged in the reconstruction of its large decorations after the fire of the Doge's Palace. The artist studied Titian, Veronese and especially Tintoretto, from which he took up the shortcuts, diagonals and light energy. After Tintoretto's death in 1594, Palma became one of the most sought-after painters of the Serenissima, working for churches and authorities foreign politicians and sponsors. The Conversion of Saint Paul, painted around 1590 -1595, organizes horses, soldiers and divine light along two diagonals converging towards the overthrown Saul; the composition also reveals knowledge of Raphael's cardboard arrived in Venice. David, winner of Goliath, conceived as his counterpart, contrasts the smallness of the hero with the enormous head of the giant and transforms the victory into a musical procession. The Flagellation condenses the violence around the attached body, while the Pietà of 1611 slows down the story in more serious pain.
