Antwerp - Venice, circa 1540 -1596 · Flemish landscape and Venetian color
Pauwels Franck, known as Paolo Fiammingo, was born in Antwerp around 1540 and died in Venice in 1596. Registered in the Antwerp painters' profession in 1561, he went to Italy, passed through Florence then settled in Venice. He is documented there in the brotherhood of painters from 1584 to 1596 and collaborates with Jacopo Tintoretto. His art combines Flemish taste for daily activities and natural details with color, movement and vast Venetian compositions. The Four Seasons series brings together oils on canvas from the second half of the 16th century: Faenas campestres or Spring, Harvest and shearing or Summer, Harvest or Autumn and Lumberjacks or Winter. Each landscape measures approximately 120 cm high and 153 to 171 cm wide. These are not abstract calendars: milking, harvesting, mowing, harvesting and cutting wood make the cycle of time visible through effort, animals, fruits and tools. The "Paolo Fiammingo" selection notably compares Lumberjacks or Winter and Harvest or Autumn. Its reading favors the material.
At Paolo Fiammingo, a season is recognized less by the sky than by gestures: working the earth becomes a way of measuring time.
