1852 -1929 · Paris, Franche-Comté and Brittany
Naturalist observation, photographic preparation and silent spirituality distinguish Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret in French painting at the end of the 19th century.
Pascal-Adolphe-Jean Dagnan-Bouveret was born in Paris in 1852 and died in Quincey in 1929. Raised in Franche-Comté, he studied at the École des beaux-arts in Paris with Alexandre Cabanel and Jean-Léon Gérôme. He exhibited at the Salon in the 1870s and quickly established himself among naturalist painters. His ambition was to make life contemporary with the accuracy of history painting: methodical preparation, numerous drawings, models posing separately and, in an innovative way, recourse to photography. Le Pardon en Bretagne, painted in 1886, showed a procession of penitents in regional costume around a church. Bare feet, candles, white headdresses and silver-gray light compose a scene that is both documentary and deeply collected. The Met has identified annotated drawings on the reverse of the canvas which illuminate the precise construction of the work. In the forest shifts this attention towards a more discreet intimacy, where the figures blend into the greens and shadows. Hamlet and the Gravediggers renew Shakespeare with a concrete staging, almost observed on the spot. At the end of his career, Dagnan-Bouveret delves deeper into religious subjects without abandoning his naturalistic demands. Dagnan-Bouveret constructs the truth with patience: drawing, photography and light transform observation into human presence.
