1811 -1902 · Lyon, Rome and classical French landscape
Jean-Paul Flandrin, known as Paul Flandrin, was born in Lyon in 1811 and died in Paris in 1902. Younger brother of Hippolyte Flandrin, he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Lyon then joined Jean's workshop in Paris -Auguste-Dominique Ingres. When Hippolyte won the Prix de Rome, Paul found him in Italy and worked at length in front of the landscapes of Rome, Sabina and the surrounding area. He retained from Ingres the primacy of drawing, the clarity of contours and the taste for a long-balanced composition, but applied these principles to nature. The Gorges d'Ollioules, painted in 1843, organized rock walls, paths and vegetation according to a rigorous depth. The Provençal site retains its harshness while taking the stability of a classic landscape. Solitude, dated 1857 and exhibited at the Salon, reduces human signs to make the place itself an interior experience. Tree, rock, light and distance compose an almost spiritual silence. Paul Flandrin also paints portraits and collaborates with his brother, but landscape remains his most personal domain. His art links the direct study of the motif, the memory of Poussin and the linear discipline of Ingres. The "Paul Flandrin" selection notably compares Les Gorges d’Ollioules and Loneliness. His reading favors color.
Flandrin gives the landscape the discipline of a drawing: each tree holds its place, each rock leads the eye and silence becomes composition.
