1861 -1909 · Limoges, Paris and circle of Nabis
Paul-Élie Ranson was born in Limoges in 1861 and died in Paris in 1909. After initial training in his hometown, he joined the Académie Julian in Paris and participated in 1888 in the adventure of the Nabis, these young artists who wanted to renew painting through color, symbol and decor. His workshop on Boulevard du Montparnasse became their meeting place, soon nicknamed the Temple. Ranson cultivated an immediately recognizable personality: passion for puppet theater, taste for esoteric philosophies, assertive Japonism and deep interest in the decorative arts. The Witches transformed a female group into a ritual procession, carried by silhouettes simplified and a mental landscape. In The Witch with the Black Cat, the figure, the animal and the plant arabesques compose a compact, mysterious and almost heraldic image. Ranson never really separated painting and decor: he also designed tapestries, embroidery, wallpaper, panels and objects. In 1908, he and his wife Marie-France founded the Ranson Academy, where several former Nabis taught. His premature death the following year did not prevent this school from lastingly extending his ideal of total art. The following year's "Paul Ranson" selection notably compared Witches and The Witch with the Black Cat. His reading favors composition.
Ranson transforms the surface into a decorative spell: the line winds, the plant becomes a sign and the figure seems to belong to a secret rite.
