Paul Troger was born in 1698 in Welsberg, South Tyrol, and died in Vienna in 1762. His training passed through Italy, where he studied the traditions of Venice, Bologna and Naples before establishing himself in the Habsburg territories. Altar painter, designer and engraver, he is especially sought after for his large frescoed ceilings. In Melk, Göttweig, Altenburg and other abbeys, real architecture and painted spaces extend into celestial visions animated by figures in shortcut. Troger combines the dramatic chiaroscuro learned in Italy with a light color and an aerial composition which announces certain developments of the rococo. The Return of the Prodigal Son tightens the story biblical around embrace, forgiveness and family reactions. The Departure of the Prodigal Son shows the opposite moment: movement, separation and promise of a drama still invisible. In these two scenes, gestures, diagonals and light make the narration immediately readable. Established in Vienna, Troger teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts, which he directs on several occasions.
