Peter Binoit was probably born in Cologne around 1590 and died in Hanau in 1632. His biography remains poorly documented, but his work places him among the painters who established still life as an autonomous genre in the Germanic area at the beginning of the 17th century. Active particularly around Frankfurt and Hanau, he observes with remarkable precision fruits, flowers, breads, cheeses, meats, glasses and pieces of goldsmithing. Put, fruits and glass on a table, painted in the first decades of the century, contrast matte materials and shiny surfaces: earthenware, stoneware, metal, Venetian glass, ham, black bread and fruit are organized in a stable abundance. The knife, foods started and insects introduce the passage of time into the middle of luxury. A fly or a ladybug can recall the fragility of earthly goods, while the carnation and silver coins open up other symbolic readings. Still life with fruits and flowers favors a more botanical accord where color, maturity and variety of species structure the look. Binoit thus combines naturalistic observation, pleasure of textures and discreet meditation on vanity. His art is located at the crossroads of Flemish, Dutch and German traditions which make the table a true theater of the visible.
