1841 -1919 · Limoges, Paris, Seine and Cagnes-sur-Mer
Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges in 1841 and died in Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1919. Living as a child in Paris, he first worked as a porcelain painter before entering the School of Fine Arts and the workshop of Charles Gleyre, where he met Monet, Sisley and Bazille. With them, he painted outdoors and participated in the invention of impressionism. Renoir was less interested in landscape alone than in the human relationships that light made possible: dance, coffee, theater, walks, boating and meals became scenes of shared modernity. Renoir was less interested in landscape alone than in the human relationships that light made possible: dance, coffee, theater, walks, boating and meals became scenes of shared modernity. The Bal du moulin de la Galette, presented in 1877, circulated the spots of sunshine between the dancers of Montmartre. The Boaters' Lunch brings together friends, models and patrons on the terrace of the Maison Fournaise, in a network of looks, arms and colors. La Grenouillère explores with Monet the rapid reflections of the Seine. In La Loge, costume, bouquet and binoculars transform the theater into a social spectacle of the gaze. After 1880, Renoir doubted the impressionist dissolution and returned to drawing, Ingres, Italian masters and a more constructed figure. Portraits, bathers and family scenes accompanied this evolution. Despite severe polyarthritis, he continued to paint in Collettes, Cagnes, and even experimented with sculpture with assistants. His work made painting an art of connecting beings through light, touch and color. The "Pierre-Auguste Renoir" selection notably compares Bal du moulin de la Galette and Le Déjeuner des canotiers. His reading favors movement.
Renoir paints less of a moment than a relationship: the light passes from a face to a dress, from a glass to a hand, and transforms the crowd into a sensitive community.
