Pieter Aertsen was born in Amsterdam around 1508 and died there in 1575. Son of an artisan, in 1535 he joined the guild of Saint Luke of Antwerp, a large merchant city where he developed a profoundly new type of image. In its kitchens and markets, vegetables, meats, fish, tableware and popular figures occupy the forefront on a spectacular scale. The religious subject, long considered the obligatory heart of painting, often appears further away, behind an opening or among daily activities. Christ in Martha and Mary summarizes this reversal. The material world, often appears further away, behind an opening or among daily activities. Christ in Martha and Mary summarizes this reversal. The material world appears later, behind an opening or among daily activities. Christ in Martha and Mary summarizes this reversal. The material world first imposes itself through the abundance of food and utensils; the evangelical encounter requires then with regard to crossing the image. This paradoxical hierarchy does not erase the spiritual lesson. It brings into tension pleasure of things, domestic work and attention to the words of Christ. Aertsen also painted altarpieces and vast religious stories, several of which were destroyed during the iconoclastic unrest. His language directly influenced his nephew and student Joachim Beuckelaer, then a whole tradition of cooking scenes, markets and still lifes in the Netherlands. By giving ordinary objects a monumental presence, he opens up a new space between history painting, social observation and celebration of the visible. The "Pieter Aertsen" selection notably highlights view Christ in Martha and Mary. His reading favors drawing.
In Aertsen, the sacred does not disappear: we must find it behind the brilliance of things, as if the gaze had to choose between immediate abundance and interior attention.
