1564/1565 -1637/1638 · Brussels, Antwerp and family workshop
Pieter Brueghel the Younger was born in Brussels in 1564 or 1565 and died in Antwerp in 1637 or 1638. Eldest son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, who died when he was still a child, he grew up in a family where drawings, memories of compositions and reputation of the father constitute an exceptional heritage. Based in Antwerp, he runs a very productive workshop which takes up famous inventions of Bruegel the Elder, including censuses, preaching, winter landscapes, proverbs, weddings and fairs. These versions are not simple passive reproductions. Format, colors, details, figures and destination are adapted to a 17th century market which wishes to possess images that have become emblematic. There Wedding procession shows the procession advancing behind the bagpipe players towards the church and the banquet venue. Men and women follow distinct groups, costumes and gestures describe social roles, while the landscape links ceremony and village life. The composition derives from a lost prototype associated with Pieter Bruegel the Elder and survives thanks to variants executed by the son and his workshop. Sometimes nicknamed "Brueghel of Hell" for his scenes of disaster and damnation, Pieter the Younger also works on humor, calendar and crowds. His work is a major case of transmission: it shows how the workshop, the variant and the demand of collectors extend an invention beyond the life of its creator. The "Pieter Brueghel the Younger" selection notably compares The Wedding Procession. Its reading favors atmosphere.
Pieter the Younger transforms inheritance into circulation: the family model crosses the workshop, changes color and detail, then joins new perspectives without losing its popular strength.
