1599 -1678 · Amsterdam gallant companies, music and interiors
Pieter Jacobsz Codde was baptized in Amsterdam on December 11, 1599 and remained there throughout his career. His training remains uncertain, the archives of the local guild having disappeared. He was attested as a painter during his marriage in 1623. In the 1620s and 1630s, he became, with Willem Duyster, one of the specialists in elegant companies and guardhouse scenes. Cavaliers and Ladies, dated 1633, brought together conversation, costume, music and social tension in a sober interior. The silver grays, nuanced blacks and some red accents give his small formats great clarity. Codde also paints portraits, religious and historical subjects. In 1637, he received a exceptional commission: to complete the great militia company started by Frans Hals, known as La Maigre Compagnie. This intervention proves the confidence placed in his know-how as a collective portraitist. The painter also frequents literary circles; a pastoral poem by his hand was published in 1633. His scenes are therefore not reduced to tavern anecdotes. Gestures, looks and musical objects organize a theater of behavior where everyone measures their place. Dated works became rare after 1645, but Codde remained active in the artistic life of Amsterdam and still participated in an expertise of Italian paintings in 1672. The "Pieter Codde" selection offers a specific course on this subject. His reading favors light.
At Codde, an elegant conversation is a precise mechanism: a look, a glove, a lute or a chair is enough to modify the entire social balance.
