Around 1583 -1633 · Rome, biblical story and master of Rembrandt
Pieter Lastman was born in Amsterdam around 1583 into a wealthy Catholic family. He received initial training from Gerrit Pietersz Sweelink, heir to Haarlem Mannerism, then stayed in Italy at the beginning of the 17th century. In Rome, he encountered the naturalism of Caravaggio, the landscapes of Paul Bril and the new generation of artists from the North around Adam Elsheimer. Returning to Amsterdam around 1607, he specialized in history painting. Bible, Antiquity and mythology provide him with situations where a moral choice reaches its critical point: Abraham raises the knife, Orestes and Pylades compete for sacrifice, Hagar receives the angel. Lastman constructs compact scenes, populated by highly gesticulating figures. Architecture, costume, vase and weapon are not simple ornaments; they make the place and the story immediately intelligible. Its light and varied color distinguishes each actor, while directed light hierarchizes the action. In the 1620s, his workshop briefly welcomed Jan Lievens then Rembrandt. Rembrandt's stay, probably in 1625, was short but decisive: he learned from Lastman how to choose the culminating moment, articulate glances and load a detail with emotion. Lastman's stay, probably in 1625, was short but decisive: he learned from Lastman how to choose the culminating moment, articulate glances and load a detail with emotion. Lastman thus became the main representative of the "pre-Rembrandtists" of Amsterdam and an essential link between the Roman experience and the great Dutch narrative painting. The "Pieter Lastman" selection offers its own journey on this subject. His reading favors space.
Lastman does not summarize a story: he selects the second where each gesture becomes necessary and where the spectator understands what will change.
