1599 - to or after 1642 · Haarlem and Rome
Pieter Bodding van Laer was born in Haarlem in 1599 and disappeared around or after 1642. Probably trained by Esaias van de Velde, he went to Rome with his brother Roeland and was documented there from 1625. Among the Bentvueghels, a community of Nordic artists, his appearance earned him the nickname Bamboccio, "rag doll". This nickname will give its name to bambocciate, small naturalistic scenes devoted to Italian popular life. Van Laer paints travelers, soldiers, artisans, beggars, animals, inns and camps on the margins of Rome. The ancient ruins no longer only serve as a noble setting: they house a farrier, a herd or a stopover. His method, described as precise, relies largely on memory rather than direct study; very few drawings are known. Le Départ de l'hôtellerie observes the moment when men, horses and luggage set the journey in motion again. Les Pâtres, with a woman milking a goat and a flute player, transformed a rustic action into a sensitive scene of rhythm and light. Returning to Haarlem in 1639, Van Laer is said to have left the town again around 1642; its end remains unknown. Around thirty paintings are now attributed to him with certainty, to which are added around twenty small etchings. His influence was considerable on Jan Miel, Cerquozzi, Lingelbach, Asselijn, Dujardin, Berchem and all Italianate genre painting. The "Pieter van Laer" selection notably compares Le Départ de l’hôtellerie and Les Pâtres. His reading favors movement.
Van Laer looks at Rome from the side of the road: ruin becomes a workshop, the inn becomes a theater and ordinary life takes on the dignity of a modern subject.
