Pietro Berrettini, known as Pierre de Cortona, was born in Cortona in 1596 and died in Rome in 1669. Trained by Andrea Commodi then Baccio Ciarpi, he studied Raphael, Michelangelo, the Carracci and Venetian color. Protected by the Sacchetti brothers then by the Barberinis, he became one of the main inventors of Roman Baroque, as decisive in architecture as in painting.
