The academic portrait constructs a social presence as much as a resemblance: pose, costume, decor and pictorial finish say who the model wants to be.

Portraiture occupies an intermediate place in the academic hierarchy, but it became one of the economic engines of the 19th century. Aristocrats, industrialists, writers, artists and families commissioned images capable of uniting resemblance, distinction and sustainability. Ingres refines line and status; Winterhalter masters court pageantry; Bouguereau applies his smooth drawing to self-portraiture and intimate figures; Sargent renews the worldly portrait with a more lively touch and daring pose. Academic teaching provides anatomy, drawing, values and knowledge of the masters, but each commission also requires a negotiation between truth of the face and representation social. Dress, jewelry, palette, flower or background are never neutral.
