Around 1494 -1552 · Wu School, refined color and court story
Qiu Ying was born around 1494 in Taicang, Jiangsu, into a modest family, and died around 1552. He settled in Suzhou, where he first worked as a lacquer craftsman before his talent as a painter was recognized. Unlike elite scholars, he built his career through workshop learning, copying and commissioning. However, he frequented Jiangnan's greatest collectors, notably Xiang Yuanbian, whose treasures allowed him to directly study the paintings of Tang, Song and Yuan. However, he frequented the greatest collectors of Jiangnan, notably Xiang Yuanbian, whose treasures allowed him to directly study the paintings of Tang, Song and Yuan. This immersion nevertheless transformed Qiu into an exceptional copyist and creator capable of uniting several centuries of traditions. With Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming and Tang Yin, he is counted among the Four Masters of the Ming. Qiu excels in blue-and-green landscape, figures, palaces, literary scenes and historical stories. Its fine and regular design describes architecture, furniture, hairstyles and textiles with extraordinary precision, while the mineral color gives the compositions a precious shine. Spring morning at the Han Palace, a long scroll kept at the National Palace Museum in Taipei, imagines daily life in a palace of the ancient Han dynasty. The spectator travels through courtyards, gardens, pavilions and terraces where court ladies play music, read, paint, converse, take care of children or prepare. THE famous story by portrait painter Mao Yanshou and Wang Zhaojun appears within this vast chronicle, but no single scene dominates. The work organizes time by moving the gaze along the scroll. The architectures open and close episodes; screens, windows and balustrades frame intimate gestures. Although the subject evokes Antiquity, clothing and beauty ideals largely reflect Ming culture.
