Born in Louvain around 1465 -1466 and died in Antwerp in 1530, Quinten or Quentin Metsys was registered in 1491 -1492 in the guild of Saint-Luc in Antwerp. Probably formed under the influence of Dirk Bouts, he became the great painter of the city at the time when it established itself as a European commercial center. His altarpieces of Saint Anne and Lamentation combine the precision of the ancient Flemish masters with a resurgent scale and motifs from Italy. His workshop, in which his sons Jan and Cornelis participate, widely disseminated his models. The collection compares three devotional images. Christ the Savior establishes a direct relationship with the faithful; Christ presented to the people by Pilate transforms Ecce Homo into a drama of gaze, suffering and responsibility; the Virgin in prayer concentrates emotion in meditation. Metsys is also famous for his portraits and moral scenes, such as The Lender and His Wife or The Grotesque Old Woman.
