Rachel Ruysch was born in The Hague in 1664 and died in Amsterdam in 1750. Her father, Frederik Ruysch, doctor, anatomist and botanist, kept a famous collection of natural specimens. As a child, Rachel helped him prepare and observe plants, insects and curiosities, an experience that lastingly nourished his eyes. From 1679, she trained with Willem van Aelst, master of elegant still life, and also assimilated the dark undergrowth of Otto Marseus van Schriek. Ruysch did not copy a truly collected bouquet: she combined flowers that did not bloom in the same season, chose each orientation and built plant architecture that was both credible and impossible. Curved stems, translucent petals, fruits, insects and drops of water emerge from a dark background. Still life with flowers and fruits thus combines botanical precision and baroque movement. The fragility of the petals, ripe fruits and small creatures can evoke time, but the work especially celebrates the diversity and energy of life.
