1847 -1919 · New York and American West
Ralph Albert Blakelock was born in New York in 1847 and died in 1919. He began studying medicine at the Free Academy before devoting himself alone to painting. Between 1869 and 1872, he traveled to the American West and observed landscapes, indigenous communities and camps. His memories long nourish a work which does not aim at documentary recording but at a mental atmosphere. The Indian Camp places small figures and their shelters in a vast landscape, often dominated by trees and low light. The Indian Camp places small figures and their shelters in a vast landscape, often dominated by trees and low light. The scene suggests a silent coexistence with the territory rather than a spectacular anecdote. Blakelock superimposes glazes, frictions and impastos until obtaining dark and almost mineral surfaces. Its moonlight, close to tonalism, makes a luminous disk vibrate in a brown or black forest. Depth arises less from perspective than from the passage between dark masses and reflective zones. Long poor and little recognized, he often sells his paintings at low prices. From the 1890s, his mental health deteriorated and he was interned several times, while the value of his work increased without really benefiting him.
