Rembrandt Peale was born in 1778 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and died in Philadelphia in 1860. Son of Charles Willson Peale and brother of Raphaelle, he grew up in a family where portrait, science, museum and patriotism responded to each other. At seventeen, in 1795, thanks to his father, he obtained a session with George Washington. This meeting became the source of an entire career. After stays in London and Paris, where he studied history painting and great masters, Peale sought to create an ideal effigy of the first president.
