1862 -1930 · Paris, Mediterranean and Symbolist Arcadia
Émile-René Ménard was born in Paris in 1862 and died there in 1930. Son of the art historian René Joseph Ménard and nephew of the philosopher Louis Ménard, he grew up in an environment where Antiquity, literature and images constantly dialogue. He studied with Paul Baudry, William Bouguereau and Henri Lehmann at the Académie Julian, then exhibited at the Salon from 1883. Ménard nevertheless refused academic anecdotes. His landscapes, often inspired by Provence, Italy, Greece or the French coasts, nevertheless refused the academic anecdote. His landscapes, often inspired by Provence, Italy, Greece or the French coast, reduced human presence to a few meditative figures, shepherds or bathers. Pastoral Scene transforms the herd and the rustic gesture into a timeless evocation. Landscape of Provence, Bormes-les-Mimosas and Aigues-Mortes show a nature structured by the masses, the horizon and muffled light. In Landscape, tree, mountain or shore become less a precise place than a state of calm. This modern Arcadia combines observation and memory of ancient frescoes. Friend of symbolist artists, Ménard participates in the Salons of the National Society of Fine Arts and receives large decorative commissions for the Sorbonne, the Caisse des Dépôts or the Faculty of Law. His monumental panels maintain the same restraint as his paintings: spaced figures, matte tones and slow rhythm. His monumental panels maintain the same restraint as his paintings: spaced figures, matte tones and slow rhythm. His work connects classical landscape, symbolism and modern meditation on the permanence of nature. The "René Ménard" selection notably compares Pastoral Scene and Landscape. His reading favors composition.
Ménard paints Arcadia without theater: a horizon line, a herd and the end of the day are enough to make Antiquity interior.
