Émile-René Ménard was born in Paris in 1862 and died there in 1930. Son of the art historian René Joseph Ménard and nephew of the philosopher Louis Ménard, he grew up in an environment where Antiquity, literature and images constantly dialogue. He studied with Paul Baudry, William Bouguereau and Henri Lehmann at the Académie Julian, then exhibited at the Salon from 1883. Ménard nevertheless refused academic anecdotes.
