Richard Edward Miller was born in Saint-Louis in 1875 and died in St. Augustine in 1943. He studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and worked as an illustrator at the Post-Dispatch before obtaining a scholarship to Paris. At the Académie Julian, between 1898 and 1901, he trained with Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin-Constant. His first figures retained a solid academic design, but his palette became clearer through contact with impressionism. In Giverny, Miller frequented Frederick Frieseke, Guy Rose and Claude Monet. Like several American painters in the colony, he preferred Frederick Frieseke, Guy Rose and Claude Monet to large landscapes. The Chinese statuette introduces the exotic object as an accent of color and rhythm. The Parasol filters the exterior light into moving spots while maintaining a solidly constructed figure. Miller asserts that the mission of art is not to tell but to provide a pleasant optical sensation; diagonals, fabrics and contrasts support this ambition. Returning to the United States in 1914, he taught in Pasadena then moved to Provincetown, where he continued painting and transmission. His work thus combines Academy discipline, French light and decorative intimacy american. The "Richard Edward Miller" selection notably compares Woman with her dressing table with earrings and Woman at the table. His reading favors drawing.
Miller constructs intimacy like a living setting: the dress, the mirror and the parasol organize the color while the light makes the figure breathe.
