1862 -1929 · New York, American impressionism and great settings
Robert Lewis Reid was born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, in 1862 and died in Clifton Springs in 1929. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, then at the Art Students League in New York before moving to Paris. At the Académie Julian, Gustave Boulanger and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre consolidated his academic drawing; At the same time, stays in France clarified his palette. Returning to the United States, Reid taught at the Cooper Union and the Art Students League while developing a career as a painter and decorator. A member of the Ten American Painters from 1898, he shared with his colleagues the desire to have independent American impressionism recognized. Flowers of apple Tree and Summer Breezes combine feminine figure, light dress, foliage and moving light. The subject remains readable, but the touch dissolves the contours in a decorative atmosphere. Landscape with waterfall shows another facet: rock, water and vegetation become rhythms of values and material. In his Self-Portrait, the artist abandons the flowery idyll for a darker and direct confrontation. Reid is also known for his murals at the Library of Congress, in hotels, courthouses and public buildings.
