1821 -1872 · Cincinnati, abolitionism and the American landscape
Robert Seldon Duncanson was born in Fayette, New York, in 1821 and died in Detroit in 1872. First trained as a house painter in Michigan, he settled in 1840 in Cincinnati, a prosperous city where artists, patrons and abolitionist networks intersect. Ambitious self-taught, he began with portraiture and copying, then turned to landscape under the influence of the Hudson River School. Nicholas Longworth's patronage allowed him to create Belmont's vast murals, today at the Taft Museum of Art. Duncanson traveled in Canada, England, Scotland and Italy; his compositions combine American observation, classical structure and romantic imagination. He becomes the most famous African-American artist of the years surrounding the Civil War. Uncle Tom and Little Eva move away from the pure landscape to respond to Harriet Beecher Stowe's abolitionist novel. The apparent sweetness of the encounter at the water's edge carries the weight of slavery, separation and foretold death. During the war, Duncanson stayed in Canada and then in Europe, where his reputation opened up new audiences for him. During the war, Duncanson stayed in Canada and then in Europe, where his reputation opened up new audiences for him. His orderly panoramas, its luminous valleys and its ruins often offered a harmonious world, but this ideal beauty dialogues with the racial and political tensions of his time. His journey affirms that a painter black could conquer the landscape, the grand decor and the international scene in 19th century America. The "Robert S. Duncanson" selection notably compares Uncle Tom and little Eva. His reading favors atmosphere.
Duncanson gives the landscape and the abolitionist story the same dignity: beauty becomes a space of freedom, memory and hope.
