La Coruña, 1854 -1928 · Military experience and court portrait
Român Navarro Garcia de Vinuesa was born and died in La Coruña, from 1854 to 1928. He first led a military career in the hussar corps while studying painting. Pensioned in Rome by the Diputacion of La Coruña, he then traveled to Europe then returned to teach in his city, where he directed the School of Arts and Crafts. This double experience as a soldier and painter gives particular authority to his military portraits. The two versions of Alfonso XIII preserved in this collection are dated 1912 and present the king in hussar uniform. On the neck is the Golden Fleece; on the dolman appear the Grand Cross of the Order of Charles III, the Grand Cross and the Band of Military merit with distinctive red, as well as the crosses and insignia of the four military orders. The two paintings, close in their iconography but slightly different in their dimensions, show the dissemination of a carefully codified official image. The "Român Navarro" selection notably compares Alfonso XIII and King Alfonso XIII. Its reading favors movement.
Navarro knows the uniform from the inside: he does not decorate the king, he visually orders a hierarchy of corps, ranks and honors.
