Salomon van Ruysdael was born in Naarden around 1602 and died in Haarlem in 1670. Son of a Mennonite carpenter named De Gooyer, he adopted the name Ruysdael with his brothers, associated with an estate near Blaricum. His training remains unknown, but his first landscapes reveal the influence of Esaias van de Velde. He joined the guild of Saint Luke of Haarlem in 1623 and quickly became one of the landscapers praised by the city's chroniclers.
