The Mannerist saints no longer pose in a stable space: twisting, light and shortening make visible the test, the vision and the momentum of faith.

In the 16th century, Mannerist painting profoundly renewed the representation of saints and apostles. The frontal balance of the Renaissance often gives way to elongated bodies, complex gestures and spaces that seem to obey spiritual logic rather than just perspective. Parmigianino constructs the Vision of Saint Jerome around a luminous apparition and anatomies of deliberately unreal elegance.
