Born in Chivasso around 1480 -1485, Defendente Ferrari worked mainly in western Piedmont at the beginning of the 16th century. Trained in the orbit of Giovanni Martino Spanzotti, he runs an active workshop and receives important commissions for polyptychs and altarpieces. His art retains the Gothic taste for gold backgrounds, brocades, precious details and elegant silhouettes, while integrating an organization of space and a softness of light specific to the Renaissance.
