1680 -1764 · The great theater of Roman rococo
Born in Gaeta in 1680 and died in 1764, Sebastiano Conca trained in Naples with Francesco Solimena in 1693 and collaborated with him in Montecassino. Installed in Rome in 1706, he studied Michelangelo, Raphael, the Carracci and joined Carlo Maratta's circle. Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni favored his rise. His frescoes of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, created between 1721 and 1724, consecrate a major painter of Roman rococo. President on several occasions of the Accademia di San Luca, Conca also directed a nude academy frequented by a new European generation. President of the Accademia di San Luca on several occasions, Conc from Infante Luis Antonio Jaime: Centaur Chiron transforms the hero's learning into a princely lesson. Alexander the Great in the Temple of Jerusalem, sent to Philip V around 1735 -1736, shows the conqueror kneeling before the Scriptures while the high priest points to the Ark. Solomon worshiping idols, around 1750, reverses this model of sovereignty: the king turns away from true worship under the influence of his foreign wives. In the three paintings, the sketch preserves the vivacity of the first project. Figures, columns, draperies and thinning organize an immediately understandable action, intended as much to instruct as to seduce. The selection "Sebastiano Conca" puts particularly with regard to The Education of Achilles and Solomon worshiping idols. His reading favors the story.
Conca transforms the story into a scene: a well-placed gesture, a column and a gap of light are enough to make the painting a moral theater.
